What Does the Bible Really Teach?

We had a visit from some Jehovah’s Witnesses the other day, and they left a booklet with the title What Does the Bible Really Teach? What a great question! We may suspect some of the answers we will find in its pages, but let us say what a good question it is.

First, we do need to know what the Bible teaches, more than any other book, journal, magazine, newspaper, video, broadcast, podcast, tweet or whatever. This book alone is the word of God. No other communication can claim that status.

Second, we do need to know what the Bible really teaches. There are so many wrong or inadequate versions of what it is supposed to say. Since it is God’s own word, we owe it to him to hear him properly and get it right.

Third, we do need to know what the Bible really teaches. We should be learning from it what God says about himself, about ourselves, about how we can have a relationship with him, about how we should live as his people, and so on and so forth.

Sadly, the booklet does not live up to its title. So, when asking ‘Who is Jesus Christ?’, it states that “the Son was created … whereas Jehovah God has no beginning or end.” Yet Jesus himself accepted Thomas calling him “my Lord and my God” (John 20:28).
